She added: "You can't live on 1,000 calories a day and be happy. Now diets are all saying 'This isn't a diet, this is a way of life, forever'. Well, that makes me want to throw myself out of the window.
Oj - jak ja to rozumiem.
I jeszcze to jest fajne:
Ways of Eating
We are all different and there is more than one way towards a healthier mind and body. Nigella Lawson outlines the high-protein diet that worked for her.
Yes, of course it's natural at this time of year to indulge in a self-gratifying fervour of denial, to enter into the voluntary martyrdom of evangelical healthy living, but I am hesitant about the virtues of dietary fundamentalism.
There is more to eating than ecstatically venerating some foods, while anxiously demonising others. Besides, how do you choose which foods are 'Good' and which are the very work of the devil? You might think you know: schoolchildren today are taught that grains and greens are healthy; red meat and animal fats are more or less the first steps to cancer, heart disease and general ill-health (not that it necessarily has much effect on their diet).
But things are not that simple. This is not just because we are mortal, and no amount of vegetarianism or low-fat eating will allow us to live strong and healthy lives forever, but because dietary laws are as susceptible to the rules of fashion as any other human activity. Whatever the World Health Organisation says, and however many healthy-eating pyramids it prints, there are dissenting voices.
I'm no less impervious to fads and for years believed low-fat eating was the way to feel healthier. Now I'm not so sure. Having read widely (but not, I hope, obsessively) on the subject, I have come round to the low-carbohydrate way of eating. I started because I wanted to lose weight. And I did, on a diet that was high in protein and permissive about fats, but low in carbohydrates such as pasta, potatoes, rice and bread. After eating this way for a while, I felt much better. Yes, you do feel positively heretical at first, and frightened about eating so many foods you're generally warned against, but there's nothing like losing weight and feeling more energetic, less bloated and generally fitter to overcome your initial suspicion.
Besides, feeling good about yourself and around food isn't just a matter of what you eat. How you eat plays a crucial part. For me, cooking is essential: processed and ready-prepared foods are high in starches and fillers and hardly make you feel as if you're doing the best for yourself that you can. Plus, the simple fact of making yourself something to eat feels like, indeed is, a positive thing to do.
We are all different and respond to foods differently: lowering my intake of carbohydrates had an instant effect on me. I'd always presumed I was just hungrier - and greedier - than everyone else. But when I ate fewer carbohydrates, my appetite decreased. My reading supported my opinion: all carboydrates, whether 'good' complex ones (potatoes, grains) or 'bad' (simple sugars), are broken down in the body as sugar, so raising insulin levels in the blood. When these insulin levels are high, the body's need is to keep them at that level and so one hungers for food that will do that. Decrease the amount of carbs you eat, and your insulin levels will drop and, consequently, your appetite. At any rate, that is what I discovered and there is plenty of documentation to show that I am not alone.
But as I say, feeling good and healthy isn't just about allowing yourself certain foods and prohibiting others: making mealtimes pleasurable, even when you're eating alone, is paramount. Food, of course, is fuel, but it is so much more than that, too. There is a ceremony about cooking for yourself, particularly, that lifts the spirits. The recipes featured in these pages - for food I love to make for myself, not expressly to feel better, but which do actually make me feel good - are not complicated or difficult. What they do is feed the body but just as importantly, bolster the self.
